Strat Coffman is a spatial designer whose work reimagines the role of standards, sensation, and containment in contemporary architecture. Queering material norms, Strat constructs installations and environments that examine how our bodies are shaped by—while able to resist—systems of standardization. Their work spans event architecture, exhibition design, and speculative furniture, often repurposing generic materials and infrastructural components to create new, sensory microclimates.

As a designer-producer, Strat often oversees a project’s full development, from initial design to prototyping, install, and staging, working closely with an array of collaborators and consultants. They have worked with a diverse range of clients and venues, from art institutions and galleries to private bathhouses and music festivals.

Strat is based in Los Angeles and practices internationally. They have taught at the University of Michigan and the University of Southern California School of Architecture. They were the 2022-2024 Architecture Fellow at University of Michigan and hold a Master of Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where they were awarded the Imre Halasz Thesis Prize and the AIA Henry Adams Medal. They are a recipient of the 2024 Architectural League Prize and their work has appeared at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Log, the MIT List Visual Arts Center, and the Goethe Institut.
